A man believed to be in his 30s was found dead Saturday morning near Crater Lake in the Maroon Bells Wilderness area, authorities said Saturday evening.

The man, who has not been identified, was found just past 7 a.m. Saturday by another hiker who was on his way to climb the Bell Cord. The cause of death was not announced.

Members of Mountain Rescue Aspen arrived on scene, which was about a half-mile south of Crater Lake, at 9:38 a.m. and declared the man deceased.

The man had “several visible injuries to his head and leg, yet cause of death will be determined by an autopsy,” according a Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office news release.
