Chinese smartphone makers Oppo and Vivo, both owned by BBK Electronics, broke into the top five of the global smartphone rankings in the second quarter this year, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, according to a report on Monday by research firm Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

BBK Electronics is technically the world’s third largest smartphone maker, shipping more than 39 million units during the quarter, slightly less than second-placed Apple's 40.4 million units, said the report.

“Oppo and Vivo’s growth story has surprised everyone in the industry,” said James Yan, research director at Counterpoint. “However, this has been as a result of years of investment in building strong offline distribution channels, competent R&D team, slicker product portfolio and aggressive marketing and promotions.”
