The Basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance and is so venomous, it leaves a wide trail of deadly venom in its wake. When it hisses, all other surrounding serpents quickly come attacking; and it also advances, but not with the same movement of its body like the other snakes, it moves along upright and erect in the middle. It destroys everything that it's venom touches, not only by its contact, but with its breath; even breaking stones, so tremendous is its noxious influence. It was formerly a general belief that if a man on horseback was fortunate enough to kill one with a spear, the poison would run up the weapon and kill not only the rider, but the horse as well.
