Corey Lynn Calter House Tour

ELLEDECOR.com: You decorated this gorgeous home in six weeks and yet it looks so layered and assembled over time. HOW?! What are your speed-styling secrets?
Corey Lynn Calter: I focused on only vintage pieces. I knew the feeling I wanted, I kept thinking: "If the Brady bunch had an opium den, what would be in it?"
I also started with a color story and a good floor plan. I knew I what i did not want, which can be even more helpful than looking for something very specific.

ED: How was decorating your home similar and different to putting together a collection...or styling an outfit?
CLC: I definitely started with a color story and an overall inspiration, which is exactly like I approach my collection. And, just like my line, I had to hold myself back from over doing it.

ED: What inspired the blue fireplace wall?
CLC: The blue fireplace came with the house and runs throughout the interior and exterior. I liked bringing elements of the outside inside and the inside outside.

ED: What made you want to go with white walls throughout?
CLC: Truthfully, the white walls may be temporary. I never lived in a home with white walls, so for now I'm having sometime with them but it could change. At first I felt like I was in a rap video but once the warm rugs and furniture came in, I started to like it.

ED: What comes first, the furniture/accessories or the art? Why?
CLC: Furniture for sure. My husband and I are lucky to have great art and it easily worked in this house. And the accessories, I could shop for them all day once the furniture is picked.

ED: How is this home different than your L.A. home? Did the different locales help inspire the looks?
CLC: [I]t's the complete opposite of our L.A. home and love them both. Both houses inspired the interior esthetic. Our Spanish L.A. home is filled with rich colors and wallpaper. It's very dramatic. The Palm Springs home is pure light and playful. Both home are filled with modern art.

ED: What drew you and your family to Palm Springs?
CLC: I have been intrigued by the desert more and more every year since I moved from NYC. It's so unfamiliar to me that I became obsessed by it. Beyond the architecture here in Palm Springs the community has been so welcoming to us. It's just the right fit for us right now.

ED: What's your strategy for choosing furniture and accessories?
CLC: I like the effect of gold details in a room so I choose those types of things easily. I also adore shades of blue -- especially in this home -- to inspire tranquility. My rule was they should be fun, conversational, and a little sexy.

ED: The exterior of the home is just as beautiful as the inside! How involved were you in the decisions on the front of the house, as well as the pool area?
CLC: The home was built in the 1957. The architect was William Krisel for the Alexander Construction Company. I had little to do with the bones of the home. Thankfully, after it fell into disrepair, it was redone with the care of mid-century enthusiasts and Krisel himself.

ED: What did you learn from decorating this house?
CLC: I could do it over and over again. I enjoy seeing things take shape. I'm only sad it's done. Maybe I should have dragged that 40 days out a bit longer, but fashion was calling.
