The upcoming 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS has been spied testing once again. This particular test mule is important however as it is wearing the least amount of camouflage of any prototype up until this point, providing us with an excellent look at the car. It was snapped testing near the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.
The brand new Mercedes-Benz GLS will replace the current GL and be renamed as part of the German company’s latest nomenclature. For starters, it is immediately obvious that the new GLS features an extensively revised front fascia incorporating new headlights and a different front grille. While the headlights have camouflage over them, these shots do showcase the general shape of the headlights.
Other modifications to the GLS will include the fitment of a new front bumper while at the rear, a different bumper will be featured alongside new taillights and tweaked tailpipes.
As for the variants which will be offered, it is suggested that the GLS350, GLS450, GLS550 and GLS63 AMG models will all be carried over to this facelifted model. A new model to join the range will be the GLS400 with it pinned to utilise a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine delivering 333 hp and capable of sending the car to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a 240 km/h top speed.
The author should check his sources more carefully. The 2016 GL is already on dealer lots. The rebranded GLS will not be available until next year making it a 2017, not a 2016 as shown in the title of this article. Also, the 2015 and 2016 GL450 is already a V6 so unless the GLS450 is going back to a V8, why would MB offer two V6 gas engine models?
