The Biking Blogger's Go Bag

As a remote writer for Lifehacker, I find that sometimes I just need to get out of the house for a little while. My primary means of doing so is a bicycle, so I typically mix what I need to bike with what I need to work. So, today I'm showing off what's in my bag.

Working from home is great, but it's incredibly easy to get stir-crazy. That's when I'll grab my bag, hop on my bike, and take off to a coffee shop across town. The bag is a Topo Designs Rover Pack, here's what inside:

  • 11" 2012 MacBook Air: I like a small, simple laptop, so the MacBook Air's always been my go-to. I just wish this one had the battery life of the newer models.

  • 3DS XL: Because sometimes you don't want to actually work, right?

  • Intocircuit T5000 External Battery Pack: Charger for the iPad/iPhone. I rarely need it, but it's nice to have around for emergencies.

  • iPad 3rd Gen with Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard: I like to keep the iPad around for reading, but also for certain types of writing, which is where the Logitech keyboard comes in. It's not the greatest keyboard in the world, but it works for my limited uses. I don't usually bring the keyboard with me if I also have the MacBook though.

  • TOOOL Emergency Lock picks: Originally, these were in my wallet, then I had to use them when I forgot my keys one day. Now they're on a keychain in my bag.

  • Generic multi tool: Because I've never actually purchased a real Leatherman.

  • Planet Bike Beamer Light: Seattle has awesome bike paths everywhere that make it so you don't have to ride on the streets all the time. Unfortunately, that also means there aren't street lights. So, I keep this around for those times when I accidentally work a bit late.

  • Generic allen wrench set: For fixing any bike related problems.

  • Extra tube: I'm generally in too much of a hurry to patch a hole in a tube when I'm working, so I carry an extra tube instead.

  • Tire levers: For fixing flats, of course.

  • Pump: For pumping up the tire after you fix a flat, obviously.

  • Apple earbuds: I'm one of those weird people who have ears that these earbuds actually sit comfortably in, so I don't mind using them. I'm really not a fan of blocking out noise completely when I'm working in public, so the fact these headphones are really crappy is actually a feature for me.

  • Amazon Basics Lightning Cable: For charging the iPhone.

  • Pearl Izumi Arm Warmers: I keep these around for those random times when the temperature drops dramatically so I don't have to freeze on my way home.
