Only three months on from its release, there are now more Steam users running Windows 10 than Windows 8.

The rapid rise of Microsoft's latest operating system is detailed in Steam'smonthly user survey, which collates information on system specs, connection speeds, and general user experiences. The data is used by Valve to optimise the gaming service.

The survey results showed that use of Windows 10 64 bit edition jumped by a significant 2.43 percent in October 2015, bringing the total number of Steam users playing with Microsoft's new OS up to 26.42 percent. The shift leapfrogs it over Windows 8, which dropped 1.16 percent to 17.46 percent of players.

While Windows 10's growth on the platform is significant, it's still a firm second place to Win 7, which retains the lead by more than ten percentage points. The 64 bit version still accounts for 36.67 percent of users, with the 32 bit version claiming another 8.19 percent.

Overall, Windows in all flavours accounts for 95.45 percent of all Steam users, with OSX scooping up a paltry 3.49 percent. Linux doesn't even scrape a single point, coming in at 0.95 percent.

Despite PC gamers being notorious for boasting high-powered systems, a fairly average 8GB RAM forms the most popular configuration, and dual-core CPUs still dominate over quad or octa-core chips at 48.34 percent versus 44.59 and 0.31 percent respectively.

Part of the reason for Windows 10's quick adoption is likely to be Microsoft's free upgrade program, with 110m install to date.
