Feet wearing Birdies The Starling Flats on a white carpet

Travel + Leisure / Elizabeth Theriot

After a long day of sightseeing, we know the feeling of collapsing on a bed with throbbing feet all too well. Since comfortable footwear is a must-have for traveling and preventing an unwanted trip to the pharmacy for bandages, we tested hundreds of pairs of supportive and reliable shoes, including our most recent vetting of comfy flats.

We went to the drawing board to research and select 29 pairs of ballet flats, loafers, Mary Janes, and sandals to try out various styles over a two-month period from trusted shoe brands known for comfort. Vivaia, Vionic, Rothy’s, and Birdies were just some of the brands that landed on our winner’s list, but we also discovered several other styles that wowed us in the comfort department, so keep reading to uncover our favorite pairs for your next trip.

Why We Love It
  • The flats fold up for convenient packing.

What to Consider
  • You might want to wear thin, no-show socks to prevent blisters or chafing.

Mary Janes are having a moment, so we had to get our hands on Vivaia’s version. The knit flats come with removable herbal insoles that offer the perfect amount of arch support and cushioning for being on your feet all day. Thanks to the square-toe design, there is enough room to wiggle your toes comfortably, but the fabric straps ensure that the flats stay on your feet without slipping off. Plus, the straps are entirely perforated so you can make them as tight or loose as you need.

We wore these flats around the city for commuting, around the office, and while traveling, and they were perfectly comfortable and cushioned for long periods of time. The best part is that the flexible design makes the shoe foldable so they can fit in a suitcase or purse without taking up much space. Even after two months of testing, the shoes are holding up well with just a bit of spot cleaning to make them look good as new. Our only recommendation is to wear thin, no-show socks if you’re prone to blisters. The shoe has a narrow fit, but, luckily, they come in wide sizes, as well as six neutral and bright color options like black, almond, ruby red, and denim.

Why We Love It
  • The shoes have a silky liner and cushioned footbed, so it feels like wearing a pair of luxury slippers.

What to Consider
  • After two months of use, the velvety material is beginning to scuff.

Since slippers might not fall under the officewear category, we think these loafers from Birdies are the next best thing. Although they look like a pair of dressier slip-on shoes, they feature the most comfortable silky lining and cushioned footbed you could ask for in a pair of shoes fit for nicer occasions. With seven layers of memory foam cushioning and arch support, we mainly wore these loafers to and from the office when we were on our feet for hours on end. The non-slip synthetic sole offers plenty of traction on slick surfaces, and the leather or textile upper never feels too tight or restrictive on the top and sides of the foot, or in the toe box. We did experience some light rubbing on the heel at first, but that went away once we broke in the shoes after wearing them several times. To fit all style preferences, the loafers come in over two dozen velvet, leather, and suede options in tons of colorways.

Why We Love It
  • These flats are just as cute and comfortable as the pricier options we tried.

What to Consider
  • After two months of regular use, we found the soles to be quite thin and do not recommend them for cold weather.

One of the best parts of testing products is when we find less expensive items that prove to be just as good (if not better) than their pricer counterparts. In this case, these under-$50 ballet flats from Frank Mully wowed us with a comfortable fit right out of the box. As longtime fans of flats, these ones were worn non-stop for several weeks around the office, out with friends, and for running errands, and our feet actually felt supported and cushioned due to the breathable footbed and cozy textile lining. The round-toe design also allows plenty of space in the toe box so your feet will never feel cramped. The knit upper also has a bit of compression to keep the shoe from slipping. We wish the sole was a bit thicker, but it was still sufficient in the comfort and stability categories during our tests.

The Details: Sizes 6 to 12 | Knit, rubber

Why We Love It
  • The materials are super sturdy and crafted to last.

What to Consider
  • The leather is stiff at first.

In search of a one-and-done pair of flats? These splurge-worthy M. Gemi flats come at a higher price, but we think they are certainly worth the investment if you have the means. They’re made with Italian Naplak leather, which is known for being soft and flexible while still maintaining a durable and supportive feel for shoes or handbags. There was a slight break-in period in which the leather needed to soften up a bit, but once it did, we were blown away by how flexible and cushioned these fully leather flats were for walking long distances. After two months of wearing, we love that they have an excellent sole with high-quality tread superior to other pairs of chic flats. The flats look like a pair of traditional ballet-style shoes, but the elastic band that goes across the top of the foot helps greatly with stability and support so the shoes never slip or rub. While they certainly look dressier, we also love that the flats are versatile enough to wear from the office to dinner.

Why We Love It
  • The design is both casual and elevated, which makes them an excellent versatile shoe option for traveling.

What to Consider
  • There could be more colorways other than black and animal print.

Mary Jane-style flats were a hit during testing, and all of the pairs we tried scored nearly perfectly, so it was tough to just pick one pair to recommend. This style from Rothy’s are the ultimate travel shoe for versatility since we were able to dress them up for nicer occasions or wear them with jeans for a casual day-time look. They come with removable insoles that offer arch support and cushioning, and the recycled knit flats are machine-washable for easy upkeep after a trip. After two months of use, we love the eco-friendly and stain-resistant materials that are incredibly comfortable, even when wearing for long periods of time. The knit material is stretchy and flexible while still keeping the original shape of the vintage-style square toe and higher heel for security while walking. We wish the Mary Janes came in more than two colors since we’d love to buy more than one to circulate in our travel capsule wardrobe

Why We Love It
  • These flats have generous arch support and proved to be super breathable on a hot day.

What to Consider
  • You might want to wear no-show socks while you break them in as they did cause blistering in the first two months of testing.

Although they’re called ballet flats, these shoes are anything but flat. They have the most generous arch support and cushioning of all the pairs we tested, so they certainly wowed us in the comfort category. The flats come with removable EVA foam insoles that are lined with microfiber to promote breathability. If the higher arch support doesn’t work for you, we love that the insoles can be removed as needed. After wearing these on a 90-degree day, our feet weren’t even the slightest bit sweaty, which is a game-changer for summer footwear options. There is a slight break-in period, so we recommend wearing no-show or thin socks with the flats to let the leather loosen up a bit, but otherwise, they are cushioned and supportive right out of the box.

Why We Love It
  • The cord bow adjusts the tightness of the shoe for a custom fit.

What to Consider
  • They don’t offer much in the traction department.

Ballet flats are back and likely here to stay, so we think these are the best ones to invest in for virtually any occasion. The leather flats are perfect for the office, traveling, going out to dinner, shopping, or any other leisurely activity since they’re not only comfortable, but you can also wear them with different outfits. And after two months of wearing, the soft outer leather still looks brand new without any scratches or scuffs. Hands down, the best and most unique aspect of these ballet flats is the discrete system for adjusting the tightness of the fit. You can tighten or loosen the cord bow on the toe box of the shoe since it lines the top of the flat, adjusting the fit as needed. Thanks to the five millimeters of padding, the Demi flats have enough cushioning to absorb the impact when you’re walking while still feeling stable and sturdy on uneven surfaces. It would be nice if the shoes had a bit more traction, but the leather sole has more of a smooth texture on the bottom.

Why We Love It
  • The wrap-up sandals feel very secure, and the leather laces don’t dig into the skin.

What to Consider
  • The premium sandals come at a high price.

Lace-up sandals have a reputation for being flimsy at best and uncomfortable at worst, so we’re happy to report that these might just be the best wrap-around sandals on the market. The leather laces actually feel secure when we wrap them around each ankle three times, and all you have to do is make sure to tie them with a tight bow to make sure the sandals have the most secure fit. After wearing the sandals for long periods of time, the laces didn’t leave a dent, and the cushioning on the footbed was noticeable from a comfort standpoint. Similar to the Margeaux ballet flats we tried, there isn’t much traction because the entire shoe is made with a luxe leather material so you might want to stay away from slick surfaces. However, the sandals pack completely flat, which is a huge benefit for limited luggage space.

Why We Love It
  • The knit fabric did an excellent job at repelling water when we got caught in a rainstorm.

What to Consider
  • The sole could be a bit thicker.

These chic pointed-toe flats from Vivaia are the best pair we tested for traveling during shoulder seasons when the weather might not be sunny and dry. A protective shoe is super important if you’re spending a lot of time outside, so we love that these knit flats still offer water and stain resistance. We wore these two to three times each week over our two-month testing period, and we found them to be supportive, comfortable, and completely water-resistant. When we got caught in an unexpected downpour, the water beaded off the upper part of the flats and didn’t seep through. Similar to our overall pick, these flats boast excellent cushioning in the heel and ball of the foot, and the knit material is compressive without chafing or rubbing. However, we still recommend wearing a pair of no-show socks to prevent the possibility of blistering at first until you break them in. We also love that these flats are offered in regular and wide sizes, and come in over 20 colors.

Other Comfortable Flats We Liked

Some flats we tested were a bit more stylish over functional and comfortable, but we still recommend them if you’re in the market for cute flats.

Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flat: These are supportive and travel-friendly thanks to their foldable design, but the Tory Burch logo is a bit bulky and in-your-face.

Aerosoles Big Bet Ballet Flat: These flats are dressier and not as versatile, but they work well for going into the office or for nicer dinners and evening events.

Allbirds Women’s Tree Breezers: The flats were comfortable right out of the box and are very lightweight, but we didn’t find them to be as breathable as advertised, and they lacked arch support.

Our Testing Process

To find the most comfortable flats for traveling, we researched and selected 29 pairs of ballet flats, loafers, and Mary Janes to test out in the real world. We made sure to choose styles from trusted footwear brands that boast excellent reputations for having comfortable shoes designed with all-day wear in mind.

During a two-month period, we wore each pair of flats for hours on end for days in the office, traveling, long walks, and other activities in which comfy footwear is crucial. We vigilantly observed the overall comfort of the shoes and noted whether or not our feet felt supported, cushioned, and flexible throughout the testing process. We also examined the quality of the materials and any special features like water resistance, adjustable details, and removable insoles. With up to six more months of testing coming up, we’re planning to update this article with new testing insights as we continue to wear the flats over time.

Tips for Buying Comfortable Flats

Look for cushion and support

Comfortable materials and details in a pair of flats are super important to keep an eye out for while shopping. Features like arch support, cushioned insoles, breathable fabrics, and textile linings are all aspects that make a flat more comfortable for traveling. Flexible materials like soft leather and knit fabrics will make sure your feet don’t feel restricted, while wide toe boxes will prevent your toes from feeling squished.

Spend time breaking in the flats

Even flats with comfortable designs might require some slight breaking in, so it’s better to do that ahead of a trip than to risk possible rubbing or blistering when you’re on an all-day walking tour. Wearing the flats around the house or for a few hours at a time can help loosen up the materials before your trip, and you’ll get a better idea of how to style the flats, too.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do you make flats more comfortable?

If your flats aren’t up to snuff with comfort preferences, there are several ways to ensure you get the best fit. First, you can get inserts to replace the ones the shoe comes with, but you’ll want to make sure the current insoles are removable. You can buy heel or gel pads to place in the shoes for customized comfort. It also helps to get your flats in the right size, even if that means exchanging them via mail since a wrong shoe size can be the culprit of pain.

  • Are flats good for walking?

Generally, flats probably shouldn’t be your go-to shoes if you’re planning to do some serious walking. Of course, flats with arch support and cushioning will be more comfortable for walking, but if you’re planning to spend hours on walking tours, sightseeing, or participating in more rigorous activities, you (and your feet) might be happier in sneakers.

  • Are ballet flats still in style?

While fashion styles ebb and flow, it’s safe to say that ballet flats have made quite the comeback since their heyday in the early 2000s. With that being said, flats have evolved into contemporary styles over the years and are commonly worn for travel, work, and other leisurely activities, so flats have — and likely always will be — a good piece of footwear to have in your wardrobe.
