Chirpy builders compete for Birdhouse of the Year title

The Swedish championships in birdhouse building is underway, with 10 young finalists competing with houses shaped like everything from Big Ben to a dartboard.

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation is organising the competition for the seventh year in a row and the 10 finalists’ birdhouses will be presented at a garden fare in Stockholm this weekend, where visitors can vote on their favourite house.

“It’s a way of inspiring kids to learn more about nature and birds… It really makes a difference both to nature and to the kids themselves,” Per Bengtson, who is in charge of the competition, told Radio Sweden.

The birdhouse championship grows bigger every year and this time around the contributions are particularly ambitious, with birdhouses built in the shapes of Big Ben, a dartboard, a Rubik's cube and more.

Bengtson said this is the ideal time of the year to put up birdhouses as around 60 million migratory birds return for the spring and summer.

If you can't make it to the garden fair in Stockholm, you can still vote on your favourite birdhouse at the Society for Nature Conservation website.
