If you’ve watched season two of Anthony Bourdain’s CNN show Parts Unknown, there is an episode where he visits Andalucia during Semana Santa. A group of artists attempts an translation of the word duende to Bourdain and his audience, but English speakers can only grasp the concept. Why? Though the approximately 5000 languages spoken today may have started as one single language millennia ago, the variety that now exist has created words that cannot be translated into English.
