Every year, Dallasites patiently wait until September to shove as much fried food as is humanly possible into their faces. Yes, the State Fair of Texas is just around the corner, which means that a panel of judges will soon assemble to determine which deep fried delights will be on offer at this year’s festivities.

This morning, the State Fair of Texas released the full list of semi-finalists for the 2016 Big Tex Choice Awards. This is the first year that the Fair has released its semi-final picks for the Awards, generally waiting until the list has been whittled down further to make us all drool.

Of 55 entries, 34 were named semi-finalists. Here’s a few of our favorites, ranked in order of wackiness.

  • Caribbean Pineapple Korn-a-Copia
  • Deep Fried Pulled Pork "Funyun" Dings
  • Texas Fried Pinatacolupa
  • Crunchy Fried Oinkers
  • Down Home Chicken Pot Pie Pocket (served with mac n’ cheese dip)

The fair did not release any specifics on each dish – you’ll have to wait until opening day to figure out what the hell a “korn-a-copia” is. Or, if you simply cannot wait until September, try it early at the Big Tex Choice Awards on August 28.
