If fans of Batman V Superman were looking for their own Dark Knight to come out and defend the movie from critics and angry fans, Jeremy Irons is not their man. Irons played Alfred in the film, one of the brighter spots alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman, and really seems to look at the film as just a good payday.
In an interview with The Daily Mail about his career and where he sees himself moving forward, part of the discussion hit on Batman V Superman’s critical reaction. While Iron is quick to say the critics didn’t hurt the box office too much, he’s not as quick to take up for the movie:
‘Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed…
‘It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear…
‘I’m tied into The Batman at the minute [the next installment, Justice League Part One, is due next year], which is nice because it’s a bit of income…
The confusing part is here is that the next one is Justice League Part One, a movie that almost seems guaranteed to be muddled on paper. One hope is that he’s talking about Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman film that seems to be in the works. I’d gladly take more grizzled Alfred and stubborn Bruce Wayne, only with less of the whole “Martha” weakness junk.
