Welcome to Mind on Fire! I am at an odd moment in my life where I am almost entirely retired from teaching English and writing at a community college. I swore when I started that career late in life that I wouldn't let it suck my soul dry. And it tried. The education industry wants to grab everyone who crosses its Schwarzchild radius and to pull them down into the black hole From Which No Normal Human Emerges Unscathed. I fought back with the mantra and practice "MAKE ART EVERY DAY!" Wake up in the morning and start marking up essays ( a practice hated by teachers and students alike and a really stupid way to teach people to write)? NO, THANK YOU! Wake up and do a Daily Create from the @DailyCreate Twitter site? Write a poem, essay or story? Go out for a morning photo shoot? YES, THANK YOU! But still, my abduction by the aliens was a near thing--like all the probing without the flying saucer ride. In this FLIPBOARD Magazine, I chronicle my quest for a life after my so-called career.
