A new £7.3m primary school has closed to pupils on Thursday following a small electrical fire.

Firefighters from Bridgend were called to Coety Primary in Coity, Bridgend, at 5.30pm on Wednesday.

A fire service spokesman said there was a fault in the solar panel system, which caused a fire in an isolation box on the first floor.

Bridgend County Borough Council said on Thursday morning that an update on when the school will reopen is due to be issued later.

Parents of the 400-plus pupils were informed of the closure via text message and social on Wednesday night.

It'll reopen ' as soon as possible'

A message posted on Facebook by BCBC stated: “The head of Coety Primary has informed us that the school will be closed on Thursday 21 April due to a small electrical fire that has occurred. It has been made safe and further investigations are underway. The school will reopen again as soon as possible.”

The state-of-the-art school opened last September on the Parc Derwen estate. It replaced the aging Coety Primary in the village and caters for large numbers of children living on the new estate.

The new school, funded by the Welsh Government and developers, was designed to high sustainability standards with solar panels and natural ventilation.
