Amazon has opened its own 3D Printed Products store, giving customers the option to design their own games, accessories, jewellery and ornaments.

From iPhone covers and cufflinks to bobble head toys and robots, shoppers are given a choice of colours, material, styles, sizes and simple templates with which to create their own item.

A 360 degree rotation feature provides the opportunity for customers to check their new creation from all angles before ordering it. The item will then be printed and shipped to you.

eBay launched its eBay Exact 3D printing app last July, through which buyers could design and order jewellery and phone cases.

The fully customisable service is part of Amazon's efforts to expand into wider markets, including wine and art in recent months.

Petra Schindler-Carter, director for Amazon Marketplace Sales, said the store's introduction suggests the beginnings of a shift in online retail to a more immersive customer experience.

“The 3D Printed Products store allows us to help sellers, designers and manufacturers reach millions of customers while providing a fun and creative customer experience to personalize a potentially infinite number of products at great prices across many product categories,” she said.

The products are printed using a powder specially formulated for the process, which a print head binds together layer by layer using glue. Once finished, the model is extracted from a tray, dusted off to remove any excess powder and coated in a sealant to protect the model.
