Samsung Smartphone Patent Details In-Display Fingerprint Reader

This article is more than 5 years old.

Samsung is certainly pulling out all the stops for its 10th-anniversary Galaxy S10. The company already boasted about its “very significant” upgrades (twice) and now Samsung has revealed its headline feature as well as teasing an eye-catching design…

Picked up by the ever-alert SamMobile, Samsung has published a patent detailing its most exciting upgrade on the Galaxy S10: an in-display fingerprint reader. And for a kicker, it shows a phone design which looks almost identical to the super slim bezels we expect.

Concept Creator

The patent, simply entitled “Electronic Device Comprising Biometric Sensor” comprehensively details how Samsung will build the optical fingerprint reader we know is coming to its new budget Galaxy S10. Moreover, we know the premium models (including a top of the range 5G version) will ship with next generation ’ultrasonic’ in-display readers as well.

And the timing couldn’t be better.

Having ‘accidentallyleaked and teased its upcoming smartphones all year, Samsung surely knew what it was doing here. Submitted to WIPO, Samsung knew WIPO disclosure rules would mean the patent became public during iPhone launch month, but for it to appear the day before Apple starts preorders for the iPhone XR (Apple’s budget model which contains no fingerprint reader of any kind) is perfect.

Feel free to indulge your conspiracy theories at this point.

Samsung

Moreover, if you look closely at the patent you will see a phone design almost entirely in-line with leaks. Samsung even boasted publicly earlier this week degrading the Pixel 3 XL notch so we know the Galaxy S10 will be notch free.

Throw in the fact Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 with triple rear cameras and eye-catching gradient color schemes and there’s a chance it will even steal the limelight from the company’s potentially game-changing new Galaxy which should launch at almost the same time
