Doc Rivers, Clippers agree to 5-year extension worth more than $50 million

The Los Angeles Clippers and Doc Rivers have agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep the head coach and president of basketball operations in Los Angeles through the end of the 2019 season, the Clippers officially announced.

Rivers' extension with the Clippers will be worth more than $50 million over five years, reports Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Rivers signed a three-year, $21 million contract to join the Clippers in June, 2013.

Rivers joined the franchise in 2013 and led Los Angeles to a franchise-best season, but his future with the Clippers came in question following the Donald Sterling scandal. New team owner Steve Ballmer was expected to make Rivers' extension a priority once he was granted control of the team. Ballmer praised Rivers in the Clippers' press release:

"This is an important day for this organization," Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said. "I am excited to work with Doc for a long time as we build a championship culture that will deliver results both on and off the court. Not only is Doc one of the best coaches and executives in the game, but he continually embodies the hard core, committed and resilient character and winning culture that the Clippers represent. It was one of my top priorities to ensure that he was firmly in place as the long-term leader of this team."

The extension locks in one of the NBA's highly respected coaches and executives while the Clippers transition to new ownership. Rivers' extension with Los Angeles will allow new owner Ballmer an opportunity to provide stability in the front office and coaching staff as he takes control of the franchise.

Rivers coached the Clippers to the highest offensive rating in the NBA last season, notching a franchise-record 57 wins and reaching the Western Conference semifinals.
