It doesn't really matter what inflection I have tried, saying "I am a Life Coach." sounds incredibly cheesy. Luckily I deeply love my work and coaching transforms lives.

So I continue to use the corny job title because us coaches haven't come up with anything even remotely better. "Lifestyle Engineer"? No, thank you.

And why hire one? If you don't already have a coach you may be wondering what the heck they are good for.

Or perhaps you're considering hiring a coach but are unsure if they can really help you with your unique situation.

Here are the top 6 reasons people hire a life coach:

1. Something Wonderful Happened!

Congratulations! You're getting married, got a new job, had a baby, launched your business, etc. All good? Not usually.

It can be terrifying and disorientating to undergo such radical change.

Essentially you are letting go of the "old" you and taking on a brand new identity-- but you're not there yet!

It can be very painful and frightening letting go of what you know. Especially if you feel you "should" be so incredibly happy and aren't.

A great life coach can help you navigate this huge change and support you moving forward in a healthier, much more enjoyable way.

2. Something Terrible Happened!

I am so sorry if this is you.

Death, job loss, moving, divorce. All the bad stuff can be like shoving your life into a crosscut shredder.

A good life coach will be compassionate and provide a completely safe place for you to grieve. Counterintuitively, taking the time to grieve fully can lessen the amount of time you spend in despair.

Most of us want to avoid this at all costs and attempt to force our way through these times only to end up living with an undercurrent of resentment and depression for much longer.

Your good coach will support you and then when you're ready, show you powerful tools to move forward into a happier more peaceful place.

3. Nothing Is Happening!

Perhaps you keep trying to improve your business, your job, your money situation, or your relationships, and nothing seems to be working.

The right coach can help you discover why you're stuck and why things seem not to be working out the way you want them to.

Then they'll help you remove these obstacles, bust through old painful beliefs and devise a plan to help you get what you truly, deeply want.

4. How Do I Make It Happen?

There is something in your life you desperately want. A new job, to start a business of your own, to meet the love of your life, but you are frozen by the enormity and implications of making such a monumental change.

You may feel like you're clinging to the edge of a cliff where staying or leaping seems impossible.

A great life coach can help you work through the fear, resistance and overwhelm that usually pops up when you are creating something authentic, exciting and new.

5. What The Heck Is Happening?

At times it may feel like nothing makes sense.

Learning how to identify and dissolve painful beliefs that are running in the background, can shift you out of helplessness and bring you back to peace. This usually helps to clear up a lot of confusion.

A great coach will help you transition away from victimhood to being a happy and more powerful force in your own life and the lives of those you love.

6. Now What Happens?

If you just walked out on your soul sucking job or ended a bad relationship, congratulations!

Take some deep breaths and know you are one step closer to having a happy, fulfilling life.

Letting go of what you don't want is the first step.

You may not have figured out what's next but a good coach can help you do just that!

You will be able to create an authentic, joyous life, really! My clients do it every day. It can be both scary and exciting. It is Scareciting, for short!

Tips!

All of these challenges can certainly be handled on your own, however if you are interested in speeding up your growth and change that is where a good coach and mentor can really help.

All coaches are different. Find one you really feel comfortable with. Most coaches offer a free consultation so you can get a sense of their style and if you are a good match.

Coaches are not therapists but they can work well together supporting you and what you want to create in your beautiful life.

Most importantly a great coach will not tell you what to do. They should however be great at asking you powerful questions so you can hear what is true for you.

I choose to work in the wellness model, the model that positive psychology is built on. Rather than focusing on pathology, the past, and what is wrong with people, I focus on what is right and is proven to create authentic happiness. In doing so, I am able to witness the incredible transformations my clients go through, and even though I wince at the name occasionally, I proudly call myself a Life Coach.

If you would like to see if coaching is right for you, I invite you to book a free consultation here, no strings attached.

If you are a coach, or have hired a coach and want to explain why you would do such a thing, I invite you to share this post with others.
