327 Four Barrel Option: 1965 AMC Marlin

This 1965 AMC Marlin is a claimed rust-free example which looks cool in its factory correct two-tone red and white color scheme. A factory 327/four barrel car, it represents the pinnacle of the model in its first year of production, and shows well inside and out. Find it here on Craigslist in Sparta, Michigan for $8,900. Special thanks to BaT reader Chicago Tom for this submission.

1965 was a big year for American cars, and the first full year of the Mustang handily overshadowed the debut of the roomier Marlin. AMC’s fastback offered greater interior room than its competitor from Ford, and with similar power. This example sports all of the model’s extensive brightwork in good condition, with no pitting noted on the chrome. An older respray is noted, though it still shows well. The custom exhaust setup isn’t bad, though the tips would have originally exited below the rear bumper.

Other than a recovered dash, none of the rest of the interior is noted as being new. If the upholstery is truly original, it’s in remarkable shape. The carpets are said to show some wear, and the center console has some flaking paint around the seatbelt buckle area. Like the exterior chrome, interior metal surfaces appear to show a good shine and appear complete. A few auxiliary gauges are mounted unobtrusively below the glovebox.

Unfortunately, the car is suffering some fueling issues, and while said to idle well, it does suffer some fuel starvation when driving. Hopefully this can be resolved with a simple carb rebuild, as suggested by the seller. The transmission is said to shift well, and the front end was rebuilt at some point in the late 1990s. An aluminum radiator was installed by the previous owner, though the original item is included with the sale.

While not the most remembered car from a decade filled with icons, these interesting coupes are correspondingly rare today.
