Apple’s latest big iPhone software release, iOS 10, has plenty of great features. But one tweak is driving folks mad: The Mail app now defaults to showing email in threads, often making it tougher to handle complicated conversations.
Thankfully, there’s a way to revert back to the old interface. Open up your Settings app, then navigate to “Mail.” Scroll down a bit, and you should see an option to “Organize by Thread.” Turn this off, toggling the switch so it isn’t green.
That should do the trick.
If you’d prefer to try threaded messages but you want to change the order in which messages are displayed: Leave “Organize by Thread” on, but also turn on “Most Recent Message on Top.” That does exactly what it sounds like, keeping your emails organized in threads while surfacing the most recent message so you don’t have to go scrolling on and on for the latest.
(Another alternative: Try a different email app altogether. I like Google’s Inbox app, but the regular Gmail app is good too. Microsoft’s Outlook app is another solid choice.)
