maud vantours’ psychedelic paper landscapes form kaleidoscopic canvasses

maud vantours uses only paper as a medium in the making of kaleidoscopic compositions and layered landscapes. the paris-based artist’s early study of textile design and materials led her to a creative practice that sees ordinary sheets turn into psychedelic chromatic canvasses. vantours meticulously sculpts hundreds of paper sheets layer by layer, building volume and dimensionality through an interplay between color and light.

organized by motif — geometric, spiral, flora, and oscillation — vantours‘ 3D paper art takes on qualities and characteristics that transcend the traditional notions of the medium. sheets of colorful construction paper are carefully overlapped to form vast circular pools of pigment, descending towards an unseen depth; angular and symmetrical motifs are created through the distinct layering of meticulously hand-cut shapes; botanical patterns are realized as multidimensional, multilayered structures; and dramatically different hues oscillate to create colorful paper mountains.
