Gymnastics is probably one of the most difficult sports to master. It requires not only great physical strength but also spacial awareness and incredible fine motor control. These things are extremely difficult for humans to master, but it turns out that they're pretty easy for robots.

For example, take a look at this gymnastics robot practicing for the Olympics:

This particular robot has been around for a while, but recently got an upgrade with a voltage regulator. The voltage regulator essentially gives the robot some fine motor control, which is what lets it pull off those consecutive flips.

The robot also features an accelerometer in its head that can measure the direction of gravity, as well as two cameras in both the head and feet to see what's happening. Collectively, these sensors allow the robot to precisely time its jumps and pull off very complex flips.

With a few more improvements, this little robot might be competing in Tokyo in 2020.
