Nine DIY Photography Tricks That Anyone Can Do

Video: If you’re getting tired of the usual selfies and perfunctory sunset pictures, here are a few fun tricks that can reinvigorate your photos with common household items.

This densely packed video from COOPH demonstrates a variety of quick DIY experiments you can try. You can, for example, make a rudimentary macro lens just by reversing a normal lens (and with the help from a toilet paper roll, mounting it at the right distance so your image is in focus). Or you can use a shower curtain to get the perfect diffuse light. And then there’s the classic improvised pinhole camera that you can make with a spare lens cap in just a few minutes.

Although most of these hacks are geared towards DSLR cameras, a few would work with smartphones too (in fact, forced perspective might work better on a phone as they lack a shallow depth of field). I don’t think I’d have the guts to try that underwater trick, though.
