'Leaked' iPhone 7 Plus Package Reveals How The Headphone Jack Removal Will Work

On September 7th, Apple is expected to announce the highly anticipated iPhone 7. And many people are dismayed about the rumored 3.5mm headphone jack removal because connecting headphones to the Lightning port will be a major adjustment. Recently Nowhereelse leaked a packaging insert that shows what will be included in the box.

According to the leaked image, Apple is naming its larger flagship smartphone “iPhone 7 Plus.” And the smaller flagship smartphone is likely going to be called “iPhone 7.” So what else is in the box?

The text printed on the box shows that Apple will be including Lightning EarPods with every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple has been shipping 3.5mm earbuds with its devices ever since the first generation iPod was released in 2001 so the included "EarPods with Lightning Connector" with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus does not come as a surprise. Most likely the EarPods will look the same as the headphones that shipped with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 except for the connector end.

Another accessory that will be included in the box is a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter. This makes it possible to connect existing 3.5mm headphones and earbuds to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. This is a welcoming addition because Apple generally sells its adapters and converters separately for a premium price rather than bundling them with devices.

Apple may also sell separate Bluetooth headphones called “AirPods” in its stores to coincide with the iPhone 7 launch. This is based on a trademark filing that has surfaced in recent months. Apple already sells wireless headphones through its ownership of Beats, but that brand has been operating autonomously.

The packaging insert seems to confirm another rumor about the iPhone 7 Plus. At the top of the insert, it says “256GB.” There were rumors that the Apple iPhone 7 Plus would have a 256GB option as the highest storage tier, but that was just based on speculation.

The leaked image shows the usual legalese that typically appears on iPhone documents, but there is a chance that this insert could be doctored. But 9to5Mac pointed out packaging leaks that have surfaced in the past often ends up being correct. For example, a leaked packaging insert surfaced before the iPhone 5S was released in 2013 with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor branding and it ended up being true.

What other features will the iPhone 7 have? Rumor has it that the iPhone 7 will have a faster A10 processor, higher battery capacity, 32GB base storage (256GB as the highest option in the iPhone 7 Plus), a dual lens camera system (iPhone 7 Plus), 3GB of RAM, stereo sound capabilities and stronger water resistance. The Home button on the iPhone 7 is also expected to be flush so the device will feel flat on the front. And the colors of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are reportedly going to be silver, gold, Rose Gold, a glossy black and a matte black.

During a media event next week, Apple may announce the Apple Watch 2 alongside the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The iOS 10 gold master is also expected to be released next week followed by the official release to the public one week after. The event will be taking place on September 7 in San Francisco at 10AM Pacific Time.
