Orthodox Jewish Gay Man Asks "Who's Gonna Love Me Now?" In Compelling New Documentary

The award-winning film tells the story of Saar Maoz's estrangement and reconciliation with his Israeli family after coming out.

A documentary detailing a gay man's attempt to reconcile with his Orthodox Jewish family has been picked up by the Israeli Film Festival.

Who's Gonna Love Me Now? tells the story of Saar Maoz and his journey of acceptance within his family, who took the news of his sexuality as a "terrible blow."

"The Torah explicitly forbids it," Saar's mother says in the film. "Homosexual intercourse is punishable by death."

"I was disgusted by the thought of what two men do together, all sorts of things were very hard for me at first," she revealed, adding that her disapproval turned to fear when she discovered her son contracted HIV.

The film isn't always that heavy, however, and features moments that just illustrate the strength of their family bond as they learn to deal with their new reality.

"At the end of the day, the film isn't about being gay and it isn't about HIV," Maoz said. "It's about families."

"The hardest thing is to sit in front of someone we love and talk honestly," he added. "If there is anything this movie is about, it's the fact you don't have to agree with somebody and you don't have to always find a solution, but you can always sit and talk."
