Screenwriter Eric Roth said writing A Star Is Born put him “into a different mind-set” than when it came to writing some of his other works.
He told The Hollywood Reporter‘s Writer Roundtable that the process didn’t abide by his “traditional training” but rather sparked deeper thoughts such as: “What is the theme of this piece? Why am I writing this? It was more sort of thrown into the morass.”
Bradley Cooper, the film’s star and director, “had a point of view of wanting to do it first person, so that you had an intimacy to it,” Roth said.
“I tried to write out conversational dialogue that felt improvisational,” he added. Roth won his Oscar for best screenplay in 1995 for Forrest Gump. He has three additional Oscar nominations for his screenwriting work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich and The Insider.
