Google Cloud Platform Pushing Hard on Cloud Migration Tools, Google Finally Awake!

Google VM Migration Service

The disadvantage of a company being a late entrant to a competitive segment can manifest itself as a huge advantage for the end user. The company will be aggressive in courting clients, will go out of the way to dole out discounts, find ways to add more value to its product, be relentless in its approach and, more often than not, go out of its way to convert a potential customer.

That’s exactly the path Google is taking for its Google Cloud Platform. The velocity of new services being rolled out has definitely gone up a notch in the past few months, and it’s a good time if you are already thinking about migrating to Google Cloud, because Google has just announced a no-cost, self-service migration tool for Google Cloud Platform customers.

Google has partnered with CloudEndure, a cloud migration and disaster recovery company, to launch VM Migration Service, which allows users to migrate their virtual machines and physical servers from their existing environment into Google Cloud Platform. Google says that the service is free to use, but customers may incur costs for the machines created and for instances that are required to orchestrate the migration.

Interestingly, CloudEndure offers Live Migration Solutions on AWS Marketplace as a SaaS subscription.

“CloudEndure is a leading solution for automated cloud migration, which AWS customers depend on to ensure data integrity and uninterrupted business during migrations,” said Barry Russell, GM of Global Business Development, AWS Marketplace and Catalog Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc.”

But it must be noted that Google chose to collaborate with them instead of just adding them as a vendor who can serve GCP customers. The joint CloudEndure/GCP VM Migration Service may possibly be the first of more services to come.

Of course, the requirements of each organisation will vary, as there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution when its comes to migration. But Google’s decision to offer some kind of support/help to assist migration is a good one, and we think more such services will keep tumbling out of the Google Cloud Platform cupboard in the future.

Migration is easier said than done, and requires careful planning and execution. In a recent article, we covered the details of how Evernote migrated to Google Cloud Platform, and we highly recommend that you spend some time reading how Evernote moved petabytes of data to the Google Cloud Platform in a short span of time.
