It was a glorious time, when children guzzled Crystal Pepsi and munched blue M&Ms if they weren’t busy doing the Humpty Dance with their pants on backwards.

Ah, yes. The 1990s ushered in so much more than the Golden Age of rap music. Sure, it was the time where The Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac carved their legacies, and for a minute we believed we’d never know what Ghostface Killah’s actual face looked like. But it was also a decade ruled by Sonic the Hedgehog, Beavis and Butthead and the shocking realization that O.J. Simpson could make noise for something other than scoring touchdowns and stealing scenes in Naked Gun flicks.

As we race toward another fresh decade—the 2020s are just around the corner—kids who grew up in the 1990s hold a soft spot in their hearts for all the trappings of the years they came of age, many of which are now extinct. (Quick: When was the last time you played Pogs, wore a snap bracelet or sucked on a Push Pop while watching Ren and Stimpy on a television set as heavy and cumbersome as an anvil?)

Nostalgia for the 1990s frequently seeps into the rhymes of MCs who've lived them, but some of the references are liable to fly over the heads of anyone under the age of 20. So, for all of you millennials out there, the following 14 hip-hop lyrics drop references to technology, personalities and fads that—for better or worse—were ahead of your time. —Luke Fox
