Kudlow: U.S.-China trade talks continue, but no deal in sight
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Sunday U.S. trade negotiations with China were continuing despite the recent dust-up over tariffs, but could not promise a deal by Election Day next year.
“I can’t make any promises. I don’t want to make any forecasts. I will repeat, however, that the negotiations between the two great countries continue,” Kudlow said CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think it’s always better to talk than not to talk. So, therefore, the deputies are going to continue to talk.”
Kudlow’s comments come on the second day of the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, where President Donald Trump signaled he was having some “second thoughts” over escalating the trade war with China, the world’s second largest economy.
Despite the tensions, Kudlow said talks between the two nations have been fruitful.
“There was a successful, constructive deputies’ negotiation by teleconference last week. I believe another one is being scheduled for this coming week,” he said.
“I also want to say that at least the U.S. side is continuing to plan for a visit from the China side sometime in the month of September,” Kudlow added. “So, the negotiating talks continue. That’s an important point I think.”
