Animated comedy grabs the biggest opening for an original movie while big budget dinosaur reboot closes in on $1bn in record time

Animated comedy Inside Out scored the highest opening of all time for an original movie at the US box office this weekend with a hugely impressive $91.1m haul, yet still landed in second place behind rampaging dinosaur disaster epic Jurassic World.

In its second week on release, Colin Trevorrow’s debut visit to Isla Nublar scored a monstrous $102m, the second-highest non-opening weekend haul ever after Avatar’s $103m second-week total in 2009. Globally, the movie will most likely become the fastest film to hit the $1bn mark on Monday after racking up a gigantic $981.3m in just two weeks.

Pixar’s opening was the highest for any movie not based on a pre-existing fan base since Avatar scored $77m on debut six years ago. It was also the Disney-owned studio’s best opening for an original title and its second best ever behind Toy Story 3’s $103m in 2010. The tale of five emotions who try to help a troubled 11-year-old girl make sense of her new surroundings after a family move features the voices of Amy Poehler, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and Phyllis Smith. It has received rapturous reviews and currently boasts a rating of 98 per cent “fresh” on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The hit Sundance comedy Dope, about a bullied hip-hop obsessive at a Californian high school, opened in fifth space with $6m, and was the only other new film on the North American top 10 this week. The top five was rounded out by Paul Feig comedy Spy, with another $10.5m for a three-total of $74.3m in third place, and Dwayne Johnson disaster flick San Andreas with $8.2m in its fourth week for a total of $132.2m in fourth.

Outside of the top 10, swinging comedy The Overnight had a successful launch with $61,523 from just three screens, giving it the best average after Inside Out and Jurassic World. The film, starring Jason Schwarzman and Taylor Schilling, will expand in the coming weeks.
