Azure DevOps makes building apps and games quicker and easier

Developers will be able to create better apps and games more quickly after Microsoft unveiled a new set of software tools.

Azure DevOps brings together a range of open-source development services that can be used on any platform or cloud. Developers can also use the new tools to build apps in the cloud or in their own, private data centres.

“Working with our customers and developers around the world, it’s clear that DevOps has become increasingly critical to a team’s success,” Jamie Cool, Partner Group Program Manager at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post. “Azure DevOps captures more than 15 years of investment and learnings in providing tools to support software development teams. In the past month, more than 80,000 internal Microsoft users and thousands of our customers, in teams both small and large, used these services to ship products to you.

“The services we are announcing today span the breadth of the development lifecycle to help developers ship software faster and with higher quality. They represent the most complete offering in the public cloud.”

Microsoft revealed that Azure DevOps will include:

  • Azure Pipelines – A tool that automatically pushes changes to a program. It works with any language, platform and cloud, and allows developers to connect to GitHub
  • Azure Boards – Allows you to track work and collaborate using team dashboards, workflow visualisation tools and custom reporting programs
  • Azure Artifacts – share packages from Maven, npm and NuGet from public and private sources
  • Azure Repos – These are unlimited, cloud-hosted, private repositories for your projects that allow you to manage files
  • Azure Test Plans – An all-in-one testing solution.

Everything you need to know about Microsoft’s cloud

Cool noted that “many of the top open-source projects are already using Azure Pipelines… such as Atom, Cpython, Pipenv, Tox, Visual Studio Code and TypeScript – and the list is growing every day”. It is also available on GitHub Marketplace.

Azure DevOps is an evolution of Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS). VSTS users will be automatically upgraded into Azure DevOps. They will see an updated user experience and URLs will change from abc.visualstudio.com to dev.azure.com/abc and Microsoft will support redirects so there are no broken links.
