LG's Insane Star Wars Robot Needs Work

This article is more than 8 years old.

This is probably the strangest accessory I’ve seen released alongside a smartphone, but one I was incredibly excited to see in action. The concept is simple: it’s a home security robot that's controlled via your smartphone and beams an image back to your device via an 8MP camera. It can also control your LG home appliances like your cooker or thermostat. The best bit? You can talk through it to warn off robbers or speak to lonely pets.

The only problem is, it didn’t really work. Whilst the image beamed to the device was clear and crisp, it often got distorted and cut out. Also, the bot refused to move a lot of the time. Sometimes it rolled around without a care in the world, other times it was sluggish and barely responded. It was also really hard to tell which way the the bot was facing and it seemed to get stuck in corners a lot.

I only played with it briefly, but it seems like there’s A LOT of work to do. It's an exciting concept that hasn’t quite worked in execution, but clearly it's a product in its infancy. Here’s hoping LG can iron out the problems before it’s released, because this is one gadget I'm genuinely excited by. Check out my hands-on with it in the video above.
