For now, the downstream speed increase is limited to the West division, but it's being viewed as the first stage in a nationwide upgrade by Comcast.

If you're an existing Comcast subscriber living in what classes as the company's West division, your broadband speed is about to increase for free.

As LightReading reports, Comcast has started deploying faster broadband downstream speeds across its most popular broadband packages, leading to faster downloads at no extra cost. Performance subscribers will see their speed increase from the current 60Mbps to 75Mbps. Performance Pro will increase from 150Mbps to 175Mbps, and Blast! is increasing from 250Mbps to 275Mbps. The biggest increase of all will be enjoyed by Extreme subscribers, though. The already fast 400Mbps connection will now be 500Mbps.

For now, the faster downstream speeds will be limited to the West division covering Oregon and the Southwest Washington region. The four broadband packages mentioned above account for 85 percent of Comcast's customers within the region. However, this is being viewed as a first step in a nationwide upgrade of downstream speeds by Comcast, meaning eventually all customers should get the speed bump.

If you're using the modem Comcast provided, then there's nothing to do as the speed increase will come online automatically. However, if you're using your own modem then check if it can take advantage of the increased speed by visiting the Xfinity device check web page.

Comcast is increasing the speeds of its most popular subscription tiers so as to keep up with demand as we all keep adding more connected devices. The company also wants to keep subscriber numbers growing and offering more speed is certainly a guaranteed way to grab consumer attention. It's also worth noting Comcast offers a gigabit internet service which covers 39 states and Washington, D.C. It took 19 months to roll out and was completed last October.
