Pope names Abp Tobin to head Archdiocese of Newark


(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has named the Archbishop of Indianapolis, Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., to be the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, USA. Archbishop Tobin succeeds Archbishop John J. Myers, whose resignation the Holy Father accepted on Monday.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has named the Archbishop of Indianapolis, Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., to be the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, USA. Archbishop Tobin succeeds Archbishop John J. Myers, whose resignation the Holy Father accepted on Monday.

BIOGRAPHY OF ARCHBISHOP JOSEPH TOBIN, C.Ss.R.

Archbishop Joseph William Tobin, C.Ss.R., was born in Detroit, Michigan on 3 May 1952. He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), and made temporary vows on 5August 1972. On 21 August 1976 he made his solemn profession. In 1975 he obtained the Baccalaureate in Philosophy from Holy Redeemer College in Waterford, Wisconsin; in 1977 he obtained the degree of Master of Religious Education and in 1979 Master of Divinity (Pastoral Theology) at Mount Saint Alphonsus Major Seminary in Esopus, New York.

Tobin was ordained to the priesthood on 1 June 1978.

Following his ordination, Tobin undertook the following assignments: Parochial Vicar (1979-1984), and later Pastor (1984-1990) of Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit; Episcopal Vicar in the Archdiocese of Detroit (1980-1986); Pastor of Saint Alphonsus Parish in Chicago (1990-1991).

In 1991 he was elected Consultor General of the Redemptorist Fathers, and on 9 September 1997 Superior General. He was re-elected to that position on 26 September 2003. In the same year he became Vice-president of the Union of Superiors General.

In addition, Tobin has served as a Member of the Council for Relations between the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and the International Unions of Superiors General (2001-2009).

He was named Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life on 2 August 2010, and at the same time elevated to the titular see of Obba, with the dignity of Archbishop. The following 9 October, he received episcopal consecration.

He was named residential Archbishop of Indianapolis, Indiana, on 18 October 2012, and was installed the following 3 December.

Within the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has served Chairman of the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, and as Chairman of the Committee on Evangelization on Catechesis. He is also the President of the Subcommittee on the Catechism.

On 9 October 2016 it was announced that Archbishop Tobin will be made a Cardinal in the upcoming consistory.
