Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres Adorably Stage What Would Happen if Woody Met Dory

It’s the Pixar crossover event we never knew we needed.

Pixar has no shortage of voice acting talent, but two of its best-loved animated idols are Tom Hanks, who plays Woody in the Toy Story films, and Ellen DeGeneres, who plays Dory in Finding Nemo and, obviously, Finding Dory. On Friday, the two sat down on Ellen to discuss their craft and all its little annoyances—and ended up acting out the Pixar crossover event of a lifetime.

After some brief chatter about what it’s like to be a faceless idol for children, Hanks and DeGeneres went ahead and improvised a brief scene starring the cowboy and the fish—let’s call it “When Woody Met Dory.” At the risk of spoilers: Woody needs to find his hat, and Dory isn’t super helpful.

On the surface, voice acting doesn’t seem particularly difficult—sit in a chair, read a few lines in your pajamas, call it a day, right? But as Hanks and DeGeneres discuss the finer points of the gig, it starts to sound a lot less glamorous. Both recall having to record version after version of even the simplest lines—e.g., “Close the door!” or even just a gasp. At this point, both wish Pixar would just keep a soundboard of nonverbal reactions.

“It is fun, though,” Hanks said. “They treat you well at those things.”

“They do treat you well!” Ellen said. “They always make me take a bite of an apple. Do they make you—so you don't have a dry mouth, you have to take a bite of an apple.”

“I've made four of these movies and no one has given me the dry apple thing!” Hanks said with disbelief.

Ouch! Apparently they both use the same sound guy, too. Doc, wherever you are out there, if Tom Hanks calls, you know what you did.
