Samsung Electronics made an operating profit of 6.14 trillion won on sales of 53.3 trillion won in its fiscal fourth quarter, both year-on-year improvements in line with the company's guidance, but net profit slid almost 40 percent year-on-year to 3.22 trillion won. Samsung saw its bottom line hit by slowing demand for smartphones and lower recorded prices for its component business, compounded by a strong won.

Looking forward, Samsung expects single-percentage growth for its phones and tablets in the upcoming year. The company says it will have an "enhanced product mix" in 2016, including new entries in the Galaxy A series, and also plans to concentrate on making its software more competitive. The mobile division did record slim profit growth for the second consecutive quarter.

Dongjin "DJ" Koh, who recently took over hands-on responsibilities for Samsung's mobile division after JK Shin stepped aside, is said to have a background in software development and played key roles in developing the company's acclaimed Galaxy S6 and Note 5 handsets. The upcoming Galaxy S7 is likely to be revealed at Mobile World Congress in about a month's time.

Samsung will develop transparent, mirror, and head-mounted OLED displays

Meanwhile, Samsung's display unit saw falling prices for both LCD and OLED panels hit overall revenue; the latter technology, however, benefited from increased shipments that mitigated the drop somewhat. The company says it wants to solidify its OLED market position and growth in the mid-to-long term by developing new types of panel for transparent, mirror, and head-mounted displays, as well as for the automotive sector.

Elsewhere in 2016, Samsung also plans to capitalize on the Olympics with large-screen TV sales, to push premium appliances like its wild, touchscreen-equipped Family Hub refrigerator, and to "lead the Smart Home era with diverse IoT-enabled products" to boost its consumer electronics business.
