When Oprah Winfrey speaks, the world listens. And with health and wellness top of mind, who better than the woman who has always been transparent about her journey to a healthier lifestyle—struggles, triumphs, et al.—to inspire change. Overcoming a decades-long struggle to control her weight (further challenged by battles with depression and thyroid issues), she’s never been better, and her gratitude continues to prevail. “It’s hard to remain sad if you’re focused on what you have instead of what you don’t have,” she told Vogue back in August. Here, five times Winfrey opened up about the philosophies that help her live her best life.

Balance is key
“I can eat anything I want; I just can’t eat it at the same time,” Winfrey explained during a candid interview. “Which is the entire philosophy of life: You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at the same time.”

Make your own beauty standards
“Gone, for me, are the days of wanting to be thin to fit into anything other than my best body and best life,” she said after losing weight using Weight Watchers, for which she’s a spokesperson and investor.

Always take “me” time
“I give myself a healthy dose of quiet time at least once (and when I’m on point, twice) a day,” she said in a post on her website dedicated to the power of Transcendental Meditation. “20 minutes in the morning, 20 in the evening.”

Be grateful from the moment you wake up
“I have never set an alarm, I don’t believe in them,” she revealed in a diary-style account of her daily routine. “They are . . . alarming! I put the number in my mind, and I wake up before that, usually between 6:02 and 6:20, because the dogs are trained to go out around that time. My first thought in the morning is, ‘Oh, I’m alive. Thank you!’ ”

Live only in the present
“Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure,” she said, speaking on the secrets to success and happiness.
