The Bolivian government, which led by Evo Morales for 12 years, has unveiled its newest project: the construction of a subaquatic museum under the surface of Lake Titicaca, the biggest lake in South America. Located in the Andes between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is widely debated to be the birthplace of indigenous populations that flourished at its banks before being colonized by Christians. The vast lake has preserved objects from mythical rites and ancient history for more than 2000 years. Last year, more than 10,000 archeological objects were found underneath the water: bones, ceramics, metal and cooking utensils, originating from the pre-Tiwanaku, Tiwanaku and Inca civilizations. To safeguard the treasures of the lake, the Bolivian government envisage a subaquatic museum at the bottom of it. Next to the city of San Pedro in Tiquina, a few kilometers from the capital La Paz, the giant museum will act as a tourist center and a hub of archeological, geological and biological research. This completely unique project will be spearheaded by the Belgian Enabel development agency, costing nearly $10 million, of which Unesco and Belgium will pay a fifth.
