We're keen on projects like this rolling utility cart that combine DIY disciplines such as woodworking and metalworking. That's why we love this bench made by Jimmy Diresta. His metal working skills are legendary, and his ability to create gorgeous pieces from scratch is always entertaining.

The concept for this steel-and-wood bench came about when a friend left him some IPE deck cut-offs. IPE (pronounced EE-Pay) is a fine-looking hardwood from Central and South America that is extremely durable and weather resistant, which makes it ideal for use in outdoor deck applications. IPE was used on the boardwalk at Coney Island and lasted for more than 25 years, which is quite an accomplishment considering the wear and tear a boardwalk withstands each year. Salvaged pieces of the boardwalk still exist and are used in buildings across the country.

Diresta built this workbench to sit outside his shop in New York City, where it resides today—and is literally handcuffed to the wall. Given the strength of the wood and steel construction, it is built from the ideal materials to survive New York weather, and should last for years to come.
