Take a Free Digital Photography Class From Harvard

Photography isn’t as easy as many people assume, but you can learn the basics on your own. And if you need some structured lessons, this 12-module course from Harvard will teach you everything from exposure settings to reading histograms.

Yep, you can take a Harvard course for free without even being a student. It’s part of their Open Learning Initiative, and the Digital Photography course is available at ALISON, a site for free certified learning courses. The course description reads:

Digital photography technology is continually changing, however, the principles behind good photography don’t. ALISON’s free online photo course gives you the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge and understanding of digital photography including topics such as exposure settings, how to read and use the histogram, how light affects a photograph, how the camera sensor and lenses work, and how to process a photograph using computer software. You will also learn tips and techniques on what not to do when taking a photograph.

The course consists of 12 modules and takes a total of 10-15 hours to complete. To take it yourself, head to the link below.

Update: Unfortunately, it looks like this course has been pulled from Alison, who sourced it from this website, where you can still view lessons. They’re working to replace it and you can sign up to be notified when they do.
