X-Men: Apocalypse actor signs on for two more mutant movies

X-Men: Apocalypse marks the end of Fox's mutant trilogy, but the studio is already working on the next couple of movies for the franchise. Although details have been scarce, recent casting news has shed some light on what can be expected.

Tye Sheridan, who plays Scott Summers — otherwise known as Cyclops — in Apocalypse, told Entertainment Weekly that he's signed on for two more movies in the franchise. While he couldn't give specifics, it's safe to assume that the next series will focus on a group of teen mutants, given his young age, studying at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

The transition from Singer's previous series, which took place between 2000 and 2006, seems like the natural progression for the franchise following the timeline shift in X-Men: Days of Future Past. During the second movie, Wolverine goes back in time to try and convince a young Charles Xavier and Magneto that they must work together to prevent the Sentinels from taking over the world in the future. Based on Sheridan's casting, it's pretty clear that Fox is looking to rejig the series slightly, bringing some new life into the franchise while still focusing on everyone's favorite characters.

Singer recently admitted that having Wolverine in Apocalypse was pivotal and signalled a "new direction" for the series. In essence, having Wolverine show up branches together all six X-Men movies and allows the franchise to continue with some kind of coherency.

It's still unclear as to when the new X-Men movies are set to be released, but Singer is taking some time off from the franchise to work on his adaptation of Jules Vernes' 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

X-Men: Apocalypse, which also stars Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey and Alexandra Shipp as Storm, hits theaters May 27.
