Fidget Cube for restless workers rocks Kickstarter, attracts gobs of money
The Fidget Cube is a cube at heart, but it also has plenty of features designed to keep your fingers occupied when you just can't hold still.
Your desk is your sanctuary at work. It's where you sit (or stand) and while away your employment hours. Maybe you're really good at holding still. Or maybe you're the kind who taps your toes, flips pencils and bends paperclips. If that sounds like you, you might already be a backer of the Fidget Cube from Antsy Labs on Kickstarter.
The Fidget Cube went from a modest $15,000 funding goal to topping $2 million (£1.5 million, AU$2.6 million) in pledges, and it still has 40 days to run. What's so special about this vinyl cube? It's a fidgeter's dream. The box is stuffed full of tactile toys, including a rocker switch, buttons, a joystick, gears, a rotating dial and a ball in a socket. The cube even has a smooth indentation that acts like a worry stone.
Some of the features make clicking noises. Some are silent so you can fidget quietly under the conference table during team meetings. It's a much more entertaining alternative to clicking your pen or nibbling on a pencil eraser.
The project video makes a play on prescription pill commercials, offering help to serial fidgeters with addictions to flipping pens around and popping bubble wrap.
A single Fidget Cube costs $19 (about £14, AU$25) and is expected to ship in December. Keep in mind that not all crowdfunding projects deliver on time and as expected.
With so much time left on the Kickstarter, the Fidget Cube may very well rocket into superstar fundraising status. It has more than 54,000 backers and the pledge numbers are constantly rolling upward.
What's behind the viral-like success of the Fidget Cube? It probably has something to do with all that pent-up fidgeting energy channeling toward a desk toy that promises to provide hours of satisfying clicking, pushing, rolling and turning motions in a package small enough to slip into your pocket. It's no wonder fidgeters can't wait to get their hands on one.
