Google Photos adds quick access to pics taken on same day, Snapseed gains new automatic features

Both of Google’s excellent photo apps received an update this week. Version 1.13 of Google Photos adds a new feature to easily look at other photos taken on the same day when in search, while Snapseed now has several new automatic features, like face detection.

When you search in Photos, there is now a dropdown arrow next to the date in the results page that shows other pictures taken on that day. The photos will pop up based on the time they were taken. Users can press the icon again to hide the photos and continue scrolling.

Google bought Snapseed in 2012 and made the app free on Android and iOS. The app is still maintained and got a major 2.0 update last year for both platforms. Version 2.3 adds two new automatic detection features. In the Lens Blur filter, faces are now automatically detected and the blur effect radiates out from it. The Auto-Straighten feature now adjusts according to the horizon in a picture. Other additions include a better tutorial, install to SD Card, iOS users can share an image directly to Instagram, and increased reliability when saving a photo on Android.

The Google Photos update is just for Android, while the Snapseed update is for iOS and Android users.
