This tricky maths problem for kids is confusing adults

Are you smarter than a six-year-old?

There’s a very good chance you probably are and now can prove it to all your adult friends by answering the below maths question.

The tricky homework assignment has left many adults scratching their heads after being posted on Facebook by The Holderness Family.

They shared the maths question with the caption: “Internet friends: solve this 1st grade math homework. #showyourwork #mybrainhurts.”

It features a picture with some letters arranged in a pattern and asks children to use the key provided to find the missing letter.

The US-based family elaborated further: “This was the final page on a 7-page sheet, the previous 6 pages were a much more normal level for a first grader.

“I don't think the teacher expects everyone to get this, I think it was meant to be a problem that would challenge the children, so for that reason I think it's great that our school included it!”

Responding to comments about the point of the question, they responded: “I don't mind the challenge and the push to think in different ways. I would just like to be able to help!”

It has left many Facebook users confused

So what is the answer?

The general consensus on Facebook is that the answer to the question is: J=14

User Jamie Nantz explains the solution to the complicated conundrum: “ The answer is J=14. It is a complex math question that requires you to substitute the letters with numbers.

“You take the value of the S, B, and G and add them to get 40. Then you subtract the values of B and P from 40. That leaves a difference of 14, which is letter J. It all has to do with getting children to think in complex ways.”
