Captain America: Civil War Teaser Trailer Break Down and Analysis

The Avengers are fighting each other. What's going on?

The tension between the Avengers has reached an all time high. We recently saw the conflict rising in Avengers: Age of Ultron but now the lines are being drawn in the sand. The official synopsis reveals some information.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

The trailer begins where Ant-Man left off. Sam Wilson has tracked down Bucky and brings in Cap.

Bucky's arm seems to be stuck. Somehow he appears to be clear of his brainwashing. Perhaps he's been on the run since Captain America: The Winter Soldier and hasn't had his mind wiped since. This has allowed him to get his bearings.

There's a bombing and it's possible the Winter Soldier is getting the blame. We see some soldiers who, based on the narration, appear to be looking for Bucky. Crossbones can be seen in the middle of the soldiers which could lead us to believe they're setting him up.

This leads to General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (looks like he got a promotion) giving Steve a lecture about how some see him as a vigilante.

We see mention of the Sokovia Accords. In the end scene from Ant-Man, Sam and Steve talk about getting help from Tony. Sam says, "Who knows if the Accords will let him help."

With what happened to Sokovia in Age of Ultron, the people and government will want more accountability from the Avengers. "You've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's something the world can no longer tolerate."

We see Black Widow getting the Accords and maybe she had to sign it (or is it Wanda?). In Winter Soldier, we know all her dark secrets became public knowledge and this may be a way for her to prevent being locked up for anything she may have done in the past. She tries talking to Steve about not getting involved with the hunt for Bucky. They want him to pay for what he did, again, possibly the explosion seen at the beginning.

Natasha asks Steve to stay out of it and he asks her if she'll arrest him. She doesn't seem too keen on her position but her hands are tied.

When we start seeing the consequences of Cap's involvement, Tony shows up with a black eye. It's likely that Steve may have given it to him before.

Steve and Sam appear to have turned themselves in. We see them in plain clothes and soldiers carrying away his shield and probably Sam's backpack. Looks like Sharon Carter is there in the background.

Tony comes in and starts talking down to Steve. He talks to him about having limitations otherwise they're just like the bad guys. He even says, "Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth."

That doesn't seem like the best way to handle the situation.

Natasha tries talking to Steve again right before the fight begins.

We then see him bust into the IFID building. It's not clear what this building is or who's being kept inside but we do see Africa on the emblem. The credits for the movie list several Nigerian roles ("Nigerian Peddler," "Nigerian Cafe Guest," "Nigerian Tourist," etc). This could lead up to Black Panther's coming in. Cap must have crossed a line in Wakanda in order for T'Challa to get involved.

At a German airport, we see the conflict between the Avengers about to begin.

Black Panther is here as well. He's on Tony's side and fights against Bucky.

What's interesting is we do see Natasha fighting in her civilian garb. This could be where the "Nigerian Peddler" or tourist comes in. Who is she fighting? We can't get a look at the guys' face but he's clearly armed. Is this someone fighting against them? Possibly it's one of Crossbones' men. Or could it be that she'll be switching sides during the movie?

There's a running chase scene. We see Cap running after Black Panther who might be headed towards Bucky.

Bucky gets some one on one time with Tony and appears to be tearing out his arc reactor.

Something happens to War Machine. We see Tony with him and not looking too happy.

This is probably after the fight at the airport. We'll assume Rhodey is still alive. He just had his suit wrecked and is unconscious. This starts to make it personal for Tony when he sees his best friend like this. Who struck the knockout blow? Was it Bucky? Another member of #TeamCap? Was it Cap himself? We do hear him apologizing to Tony. "Sorry Tony. You know I wouldn't do this if I had any other choice."

And it all ends with a two-on-one fight with Cap and Bucky against Tony.

Actually, let's relive that scene one more time.
