Assassin’s Creed animated series coming from Castlevania’s Netflix producer

An animated Assassin's Creed feature is coming soon from Adi Shankar, the producer of the animated Castlevania series for Netflix that debuts on Friday.

Shankar, writing on his Facebook page earlier today, said Ubisoft contacted him about the project and asked him to develop an original story.

In addition to the upcoming Castlevania series, Shankar is known for his work on 2012's Dredd and 2011's Machine Gun Preacher.

Shankar offered no other details about the project. As a time-hopping action-adventure, Assassin's Creed has never been bound to a single character or era, so it's possible Shankar is being asked to come up with an entirely new protagonist and era for the setting.

Assassin's Creed last year got a full length theatrical feature. Despite the star power of Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender it was a critical disappointment, but it still grossed $240 million globally, against a production budget of $125 million, good for eighth place among video game adaptations.

The next Assassin's Creed video game, Origins, is coming Oct. 27 to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It is set in Egypt circa 300 B.C., the earliest period the 10-year-old series has explored. For more on what it offers, see our hands-on impressions from E3 2017.
