A 21-year-old man was found alive with no visible traumatic injuries 47 days after he and his girlfriend became trapped in a remote part of Nepal, authorities said.

On March 10, Liang Sheng-yueh and 19-year-old Liu Chen-chun were reported missing after they went hiking in the Himalaya mountains of Nepal. They'd been trekking the Ganesh Himal trail for two days without a guide, carrying their own food and camping supplies. The two became lost after heavy snowfall, and the pair slipped when they attempting to climb down a waterfall, trapping them on a ledge with no way to climb up or down. After the were declared missing, rescuers scoured the area for two weeks after they went missing, and revamped search efforts on April 20.

The pair survived eating snow and salt after their food supplies dwindled, but Liu died three days before the rescue. Liang stayed with her body until he was rescued by helicopter and taken to a hospital in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu. He reportedly lost 30 kilograms (equivalent to roughly 66 pounds) during the ordeal, and had lice in his hair and maggots on his foot.

"Despite having to live like that for 47 days, he appears to be mostly normal," Ajay Singh Thapa, a doctor at the hospital, told ABC News. Liu's body was also airlifted by helicopter.
