New Google Chrome app blocks all Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers

This article is more than 8 years old

Users who install the extension see a warning sign based on the long-running space opera’s famous opening crawl if the page they are about to visit mentions JJ Abrams’ new episode

It’s the dilemma facing every Star Wars fan: how to surf the internet without being assaulted from all sides with spoilerific articles and social media shares about new instalment The Force Awakens. Now a new Google Chrome plugin is promising to keep users blissfully unaware of even the most minor plot detail from JJ Abrams’ mega-hyped new film.

The Star Wars Spoiler Blocker extension promises to warn you about Star Wars content on any page you’re about to visit. If the offending article reveals – don’t worry we made this one up – that Luke Skywalker is Kylo Ren’s father, the user will see only a large box resembling the long-running space saga’s famous opening crawl with the warning “potential spoilers ahead” rather than the piece in question. They will then be given the option to “proceed anyway”, should the temptation to discover whether Jar Jar Binks finally gets his comeuppance in Abrams’ film become overwhelming.

Created by Alex Jumašev and Max Al Farakh of tech company Jitbit, the extension is available in the Chrome store. A small Stormtrooper icon is added to the top of the browser, allowing the app to be turned on and off.

One Star Wars fan who won’t be worried about spoilers ruining his day ahead of the film’s release in UK cinemas on 17 December and US multiplexes a day later is three-time Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg. The director of ET and long-term George Lucas collaborator has seen Abrams’ movie three times, according to new comments from British actor Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in The Force Awakens.

“I haven’t seen the film yet – I kinda want to, and I kinda don’t,” Ridley told Glamour magazine. “Steven Spielberg’s seen it three times, as he told me when I met him!”

Spielberg was also one of the first people to see Lucas’ Star Wars in 1977, famously telling the filmmaker it would be a hit. The Jaws director revealed last year that he bet on the space opera beating his own 1977 sci fi epic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, at the box office, which it duly did, by accepting Lucas’ offer to swap points on the two blockbusters
