Ranking the 10 Most Fashionable Players in Tennis

Four tennis players landed on Sports Illustrated's inaugural Fashionable 50 issue. Released this week, the Fashionable 50 includes a list of the most stylish athletes in the world. 

Sports Illustrated assembled a group of editors and fashion experts as the arbiters of style. They concluded Serena Williams was the only tennis player worthy of the Top 10—the "Style MVPs."

Although tennis was well-represented—Venus Williams, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova made the list—this tennis-loving writer believes Sports Illustrated overlooked a few players.

Perhaps more than any professional athletes, tennis players exude personal style. They show off the latest fashion trends on and off the court. They are globe-trotting professionals who play a sport in which trend- setting and party-going is part of the job. 

So just who are the most fashionable tennis players?

Style is selective. However, a player's impact on fashion is measurable. How often do they collaborate with designers? Are they fixtures at fashion weeks? Are they as likely to show up in fashion magazines as they are on the sports pages? Do the words stunning, fabulous and gorgeous often precede their names?  

Tennis has so many fashionistas and "fashionmistas" that it's hard to narrow it down to 10. But here they are—the 10 most fashionable tennis players:

Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki and Kei Nishikori earn honorable mentions.

Radwanska and Wozniacki, pictured above with Ana Ivanovic, enjoy showing off their fashion sense at WTA player events.

Radwanska often opts for ruffles and lace. However, she's also not afraid to wear leather with sheer accents. 

Wozniacki gravitates to classic style. She wears Stella McCartney-designed tennis dresses and is a regular at fashion week. She even has a fashion section on her official website. 

Kei Nishikori has a casual, almost haute hip-hop style. He combines sporty and club-hoping wear with ease, as seen in this Japanese fashion magazine.

Jelena Jankovic enjoys the red-carpet arrivals at player parties. 

Her style ranges from elegant hollywood glam to risque 1980s punk. But most of the time her outfits are body-hugging mini dresses. On her official Facebook page, Jankovic lists designing her own clothing line as one of her interests. 

She's one of the most fashion-forward players.

The fashion industry showcases its wears on long, lean women like Venus Williams.

A fashion designer herself, Williams has a knack for knowing where to draw the line between daring and ridiculous. Unafraid to experiment with colors and patterns, Venus looks regal in whatever she wears. 

She owns an active wear clothing line—Eleven by Venus. That line features yoga and lounge wear as well as tennis outfits. 

Venus and sister Serena have been making fashion statements from the moment they hit the courts with braided-and-beaded hair.

Grigor Dimitrov's classic look is tailor-made for wearing couture. 

When out on the town, he looks and dresses far more sophisticated than most 24-year-olds. Perhaps that's why he's caught the eye of older women such as his former girlfriend Maria Sharapova (29). He's recently been linked to Nicole Scherzinger, former lead singer for the Pussycat Dolls, who is in her late 30s. 

Two years ago, Vogue featured a story about Sharapova's stylish young boyfriend. Although the couple broke up, Dimitrov had grabbed enough of her limelight to become a style star in his own right.

Like Venus Williams, Ivanovic has a runway model's body and smart fashion sense. 

One of the most glamorous players on tour, Ivanovic is at ease in high style. A classic beauty, she rarely misses the mark with her choices. However, she also plays it safe. Her consistently solid looks land her at No. 7 on this list.

Marrying a runway model doesn't always translate to fashion sense. But it does with Tomas Berdych, who had swagger before he settled down.

Berdych takes more style changes than most men on the ATP Tour. His colorful run with H&M on the court gave tennis fans plenty of fashion fodder. But off the court, Berdych is as stylish as they come. From his flawless hair to the tip of his shoes, Berdych is a well-put-together guy.

One of the tallest female tennis players in the history of the sport, Sharapova naturally stands out in a crowd. Instead of playing down her size, Sharapova plays it up. She often wears short skirts that show off her statuesque legs.

When winding down, she opts for a more laid-back, masculine style. Whether dolled up or dressed down, Sharapova knows how to work designer clothing.

Roger Federer has a smooth, debonair style. He's one of those people who looks formal, even in a T-shirt. He's come a long way from his younger days when he wore long hair and rocked typical jock style. 

He's matured into a style icon.

From the infamous catsuit to her controversial cover of the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year issue, Williams enjoys pushing the fashion envelope.  

Besides having her own clothing line, Williams has graced the cover of Vogue, Glamour, Essence, New York and a host of other non-sports-related magazines. 

Athlete stylist Brandon Williams, one of the experts for Sports Illustrated's Fashionable 50, told the magazine: "Being an absolute force on the tennis court just isn’t enough for Serena; the 21-time Grand Slam champion is just as fierce and commanding on the red carpet and the runway."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has evolved into one of the most fashionable athletes in any sport. Sports Illustrated's team snubbed the Frenchman, who models fashion like a pro.

Two years ago, Tsonga was featured in a 10-page spread in the French GQ magazine.

What makes Tsonga so fashionable is he transitions from elegant suits to street-wear better than anyone. Few players can go from board-room chic to urban casual with such ease.

Whether on the red carpet, the runway, court or lounging around, Tsonga maintains a strong sense of style.

Few pull off the fashion-model pose like Daniela Hantuchova. 

When it's a formal event, you won't catch her arriving dressed down in flats or flip-flops. She goes all out. Her stilettos are fierce, her dress is on point and you can put money on it she will strike that celebrity-style pose.

She's managed to fill entire calendars with fashion poses. Proceeds from the calendars were donated to charity. 

Once ranked as high as No. 5, Hantuchova is now No. 176. Because her game has faltered, her name is mentioned less. However, that hasn't stopped her from being the show-stopper at player parties. 

Always on point, Hantuchova is the most fashionable player in tennis.
