1982 Mercedes Benz 300TD Wagon

This 1982 Mercedes Benz 300TD wagon looks good, is said to be free of rust and features some nice European market touches. These days most W123 chassis cars have mileage in the quarter-million mile plus range, so this example’s sub-100k is actually relatively low. Find it here on Craigslist in Santa Cruz, California for $8k. Special thanks to BaT reader Janos Z. for this submission.

Sitting over Mercedes’ long-produced Bundt alloys and finished in a nice medium blue, in many ways this car matches thousands sold in the US over its long production run. Where this car deviates is its attractive, slim European bumpers and flush-fitting headlights. These changes make the car look significantly more modern than the typical US market car with sealed beam lights and chunky impact bumpers.

The cabin appears to be well cared for, though a carpeted blue dash pad may either hide cracks or is used as a preventative measure. Even in high-mileage cars Mercedes’ thick, hard-wearing MBtex upholstery generally looks quite good and in this low mileage example it seems to be particularly good. Though not fitted with a manual gearbox, this turbodiesel should be sufficiently swift to keep up with modern traffic.

A good detailing could have this famously long-lived engine looking very good, though as-is we don’t see anything out of the ordinary for a car with nearly 100k miles. The seller states that it is ready to drive anywhere, and though no issues are mentioned, a little wetness can be seen on the valve cover.

If everything is as good as it appears, we’d leave this one alone and use it as a semi-daily driver. Comfortable, durable and reasonably efficient, this one should be around for a good long time.
